Spring 2005

April 13:

Carter Phillips, former Assistant Solicitor General and the Managing Parter of the Washignton DC office of Sidley, Austin, Brown & Wood, will give a talk entitled "Arguing in the Supreme Court: A Practitioner's Perspective." This event is co-sponsored with The Federalist Society. 4:30-6:00 PM in room 129.

April 15:


Brown Bag Lunch Series: Owen Fiss, Sterling Professor of Law at Yale Law School, will speak with us about the idea of a Constitution without borders. Just hope that he doesn't cold call you. POSTPONED. Stay tuned for more details.

April 17 & 18:

Judicial Nominations Teach-ins: ACS will be co-sponsoring two teach-ins for the local community about why judicial nominations are important and how to get involved. Speakers include YLS professors Jack Balkin and Deborah Cantrell as well as Erica Swanson, Field Manager for Judicial Nominations and Special Projects at the Leadership Conference on Civil Rights. The April 17 teach-in will be at 3 pm in YLS room 122, and the April 18 teach-in will be at 7:30 pm in YLS room 127. For more information, please contact megan.ceronsky at yale.edu.

April 21:

Calvin Johnson, Andrews and Kurth Centennial Professor of Law at the University of Texas, will meet with ACS at 4 PM to discuss his lateset book "Righteous Anger at the Wicked States: The Meaning of the Founders' Constitution." The Yale Federalist Society will sponsor a response by Professor Gary Lawson, Professor and Abraham & Lillian Benton Scholar at Boston University School of Law (YLS '83), a founding member of the Federalist Society.


April 27:

What's the Matter with Wal-Mart? Resisting Sex Discrimination, Unfair Labor Practices and International Human Rights Abuses by the World’s Largest Corporation This panel will bring three important speakers to the law school to discuss major law-suits and organizing efforts aimed at a company employing 1.2 million Americans, more than the combined population of South Dakota and Wyoming. Speakers include Brad Seligman, Executive Director of the Impact Fund and lead counsel in the nation-wide class action sex discrimination suit Dukes v. Walmart Stores, Terry Collingsworth, Executive Director of the International Labor Rights Fund, and Ben Sachs, Assistant General Counsel for the SEIU. Mike Wishine, visiting professor at YLS and Professor of Clinical Law at NYU Law School, will serve as moderator. Vicki Shultz, Ford Foundation Professor of Law and Social Sciences, will as serve as a commentator. 6:30 to 8:30 pm in YLS room 129. Co-sponsored with the Worker's Rights Project.

May 2:

Liberal-Liberal Debate: The Role of Religion in Progressive Politics. Jim Wallis, the bestselling author of God's Politics: Why the Right Gets It Wrong and the Left Doesn't Get It and Executive Director of Sojourners: Christians for Justice and Peace will debate Barry Lynn, the Executive Director of Americans United for Separation of Church and State about religion's role in shaping Progressives' policy preferences, rhetoric, and political strategy. Join us to disscuss the topic that many political observers claim helped decide the 2004 presidential election. Co-sponsored by the Yale Law School Democrats.
