U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement Discloses State-Federal Immigration Agreements

Pursuant to a request by the Clinic under the Freedom of Information Act, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement has produced for public examination a large number of so-called "Memoranda of Understanding," by which states (or counties) and ICE agree to cooperate in enforcing federal immigration law.

These documents shed important light on the extent and the nature of state and federal collaboration in immigration enforcement. The Clinic has made them available here for public viewing. The Freedom of Information Act's purpose is, in the words of one court, to allow citizens to "see what their government is up to." It is a powerful tool of accountability and transparency.

Danbury 11 Lawsuit Filed in District Court

A group of Danbury, Ct. residents, widely known as the Danbury 11, have filed suit in the U.S. district court for the District of Connecticut. The suit names as defendants the City of Danbury, its Mayor Mark Boughton, several of its police officers, and a number of federal agents.

The suit challenges the City's unconstitutional program of unlawful immigrant enforcement, and federal authorities' involvement in that program. The suit also seeks redress for nine of the Danbury 11 for their unlawful arrest in which both Danbury police officers and federal immigration agents were implicated.

About the Clinic

The Worker and Immigrant Rights Clinic represents immigrants and low-wage workers in Connecticut in labor, immigration, trafficking, and other civil rights areas, through litigation for individuals and non-litigation advocacy for community-based organizations.

Students handle cases at all stages of legal proceedings in Immigration Court, U.S. district Court, and other forums.

Our non-litigation work includes representation of grassroots organizations in regulatory and legislative reform efforts, media advocacy, strategic planning, and other matters.
